Green Thumbs Club has a good thing growing at Solivita®

February 06, 2009
POINCIANA, FL --- From the moment you drive into Solivita®, you can't help but be impressed with the natural beauty of this award-winning, active adult community on the Polk County side of Poinciana.

Lush trees, flowering shrubs, and a kaleidoscope of colorful annuals and perennials grace the main streets and common areas and complement the community's 4,300 acres, punctuated by lakes, waterways, wooded conservation areas, and natural wetlands.

This picture postcard setting being developed by Avatar® Properties Inc. has been amplified by the manicured lawns, lush gardens and colorful flower beds of neighborhood residences, all lending even more color and character to Solivita's® beautiful landscape.

Some of the credit goes to Sally Guminski and the other 129 resident members of the Green Thumbs Club which has a good thing growing at Solivita®.

"We simply love gardening and enhancing the natural beauty of our homes, our neighborhoods and our community," said Guminski, a transplant from Michigan where she taught high school biology before moving to Solivita® over five years ago with her husband Tom.

"I was so impressed with what the club was doing that I decided to get involved right after we moved here.  It's a class act," said Guminski, the Club's current president.

In addition to sprucing up their gardens and flower boxes at home, the Club schedules monthly workshops, lectures, meetings, and trips.  The 2008 calendar included Tom MacCubbin, local urban horticulturist and host of the radio show Better Lawns & Gardens, who discussed container gardening, author and columnist Monica Brandies who lectured on 'Color in the Garden', spring and fall flower arrangement workshops by Kissimmee Florist, and a trip to Leu Gardens in Orlando.

In December the Club's annual Holiday Fair, which has donated over $27,000 to local charities since 2003, raised $6,000 for the Women's Resource Center in Winter Haven from the sale of silk flower arrangements, live plants, gifts and other items.

"Then there's the annual and very popular Solivita® Mardi Gras on February 24 where we make and sell our New Orleans-style bread pudding with whiskey sauce," Guminski said, noting the proceeds help fund the Club's various activities.

The 2009 calendar of events also includes a guided tour of the Lucas Nursery and Butterfly Conservatory in Oviedo, and Jessica Sullivan of the UF/FAS Osceola County Extension who will speak on "Florida Yards and Neighborhoods".

In addition, the Green Thumbs Club is working with Avatar® and PROscape, Avatar's® landscape architecture and maintenance firm, to plan an on-site memorial and meditation garden.

The Green Thumbs Club is just one of 114 resident-run clubs and organizations at Solivita® which is located just 21 miles from Walt Disney World® in Orlando.  The community also has over 100 weekly activities and a host of amenities including two 18-hole championship golf courses at the Stonegate Golf Club.  Golf is complemented by the dynamic Mediterranean-style Village Center with three restaurants and the award-winning 32,000 sq. ft. Riviera Spa & Fitness Center, Freedom Park which includes a championship caliber softball diamond and a total of 10 lighted tennis and pickle-ball courts, and the brand new Palms amenity complex and 20,000 sq. ft. lifestyle center which has already earned a 50+ Housing Award from the National Association of Home Builders and a pair of Aurora Awards at the 2008 Southeast Building Conference.
